How important is it to get your air ducts cleaned?

Although many companies will tell you that there are health benefits to cleaning your air ducts and that it is recommended by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), it just isn’t true. The average household should not need their air ducts cleaned if they regularly change their air filter.

There is a summary of the EPA’s suggestions on their website, including this statement: “Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. Neither do studies conclusively demonstrate that particle (e.g., dust) levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts. This is because much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space. It is important to keep in mind that dirty air ducts are only one of many possible sources of particles that are present in homes.”

Wildcat Heating and Cooling does not offer air duct cleaning because it is rarely ever needed and usually is just a frivolous cost that many companies want to add to your bill. We only recommend and provide services that you need and will truly benefit you and your family.

What is involved in installing a new HVAC system?

If a heating and cooling system is being added to the home for the first time, most of the following items will be required in order to install the new system:

  • Ductwork
  • Insulation
  • Refrigerant piping
  • Electrical service
  • Wiring
  • Thermostat
  • Condensate piping
  • Flue piping
  • Flue terminations
  • Chimney liner
  • Slabs
  • Filter
  • Driers
  • Registers
  • Grills
  • Drain pans
  • Evaporator coil

Besides the equipment, the most significant component in a new system is ductwork, which can either be metal or fiberglass. Based on the amount of air that needs to be delivered to the space, will determine the size of the ductwork necessary. The system consists of supply and return; the supply duct is attached to the outlet of the furnace or air handler and delivers air to individual zones in your home.

How do I select the right heating/cooling system?

First, request an energy analysis of your home to determine operating cost. Wildcat Heating and Cooling is happy to work with you to find the best system for your home.

Why should I replace my existing heating or air conditioning system?

Today’s systems are up to 60% more efficient than systems manufactured as little as ten years ago. As a system ages, repairs become more expensive and efficiency declines.

While installing a new system may present an up-front cost, higher efficiency and less need for expensive repairs will quickly compensate. Take into consideration the amount you’ll save on your next utility bill with a more efficient system.

What are some preventative maintenance things I should be aware of?

Heat pumps and oil-fired furnaces and boilers need a yearly professional tune-up. Gas-fired equipment, on the other hand, burns cleaner and can be serviced every other year. A close inspection will uncover leaks, soot, rust, rot, corroded electrical contacts and frayed wires.

How long can I expect a new system to last?

If you keep up with the suggested maintenance of your unit, industry standards suggest that both an air conditioner and a gas furnace should last 10-15 years.

What is involved in replacing an New system?

If a system is being added to the home for the first time, most of the items noted above may be required in order to install the new system. Besides the equipment, the most significant component is ductwork.

The ductwork can be either metal or fiberglass. The ductwork needs to be properly sized to deliver the right amount of air to each room. The ductwork consists of supply and return. The supply duct is attached to the outlet of the furnace or air handler and delivers air to individual zones in your home.

We will determine the size of the ductwork going into a space by the amount of air that needs to be delivered to the space.

How expensive are air conditioning and heat pump systems?

Many factors affect the cost of a heating or air conditioning system, including the size of your home, the type and condition of the ductwork installed and accessories you might need such as a thermostat or an electronic air cleaner.

We have a complete range of systems and accessories available to meet all your needs, including your financial ones!

Should I change my indoor coil?

When replacing your air conditioner or heat pump, the answer is most likely yes. The efficiency ratings that are advertised for an air conditioner or heat pump are based on the performance as part of a matched system.

If only the outdoor portion is changed, the efficiency and savings could be less than that of a matched system.

What does the R22 Phase Out mean for me?

R22 will become illegal in the United States starting January 1st, 2020. This means that it cannot be manufactured or imported after this date. Commercial HVAC Systems still using r22 will not be affected.

Residential R22 system owners can continue to use their system, however repairs will not be permitted after 01/01/2020.

R22 System owners are urged to take care of repairs now and plan for a HVAC system update to avoid an emergency HVAC replacement later on.
